What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to braces. Instead of using the metal brackets, wires and rubber bands of traditional braces, it uses a retainer-like set of clear aligners to slowly shift the teeth into a straightened, more aesthetically-pleasing position.

Because Invisalign is removable and can be worn without other people knowing that you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, it is very popular with older patients who wish to avoid the unfortunate stigma of adult braces.

What Is the Invisalign Treatment Process Like?

Invisalign treatment is quite simple. After Dr. Jordan Bower determines that Invisalign is the right orthodontic treatment for you, he will take comprehensive images, molds, and measurements of your mouth, and begin developing a custom treatment plan that fits your needs.

These images and information are sent to an Invisalign laboratory, where your custom aligners will be manufactured. When they’re sent back to Dr. Bower, our team gives you a call so you can come pick them up and begin treatment.

You will wear your aligners for about 22 hours each day. They should be removed only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. They can also be removed if you play contact sports. Every two weeks (or as directed by Dr. Bower), you will switch to the next set of aligners. You will also have a regular appointment every six weeks so that the doctor can track your progress.

The average treatment requires about 20-24 sets of aligners, making most Invisalign treatment plans last about a year. However, this may vary depending on the needs of each individual patient.

What Are the Benefits of Invisalign?

Invisalign has a number of advantages over traditional braces. Here are just a few of them:

• Invisible and can be worn anywhere – Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible and do not affect your speech or the appearance of your teeth. You can wear them to work, on dates or just about anywhere without drawing attention.
• Comfortable – With no wires or metal brackets to poke your mouth, Invisalign is much more comfortable than traditional braces. The pressure on your teeth is also much more gradual, unlike the discomfort of  newly-tightened wires.
• Convenient – You don’t have to undergo regular 2-week braces adjustments, which means you save quite a bit of time that would otherwise be spent in the dentist’s chair!
